Liverpool, England – Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, thanks to a first-half penalty from Viktor Gyokeres. While the win propelled the Gunners back to the top of the Premier League table, manager Mikel Arteta expressed a tinge of disappointment, suggesting the scoreline should have reflected a more dominant performance.
The pivotal moment arrived when Everton defender Jake O'Brien was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area. Gyokeres stepped up and calmly converted, marking his first goal in six games. Notably, captain Martin Odegaard allowed Gyokeres to take the penalty over Bukayo Saka, which Arteta approved of, highlighting the players' ownership on the pitch.
Despite controlling the game for extended periods, particularly in the first half, Arsenal failed to capitalize on their opportunities to extend their lead. Arteta acknowledged this frustration, stating, "In the second half we should have scored a second or third goal to be more relaxed. We didn't do that and against this type of team it can be tense". He further reflected on the need for precision in the final third, a recurring theme from previous matches where dominance didn't translate into a comfortable scoreline.
Everton, playing in their new stadium, proved to be a tough opponent, defending doggedly and making it difficult for Arsenal to break them down. Manager David Moyes acknowledged his team's commitment and determination but hinted at a disparity in quality. "Disappointed with the goal we conceded. We gave away a stupid penalty kick," he said. "Overall I thought we fought incredibly hard to get something out of the game and challenged Arsenal for long periods".
Arsenal's victory was crucial in reclaiming the top spot after Manchester City briefly overtook them with a 3-0 win over West Ham United earlier in the day. With the Gunners leading the Premier League on December 25th, Arteta expressed "belief and confidence" in his team's title bid. He emphasized the importance of focusing on their own performances and results, acknowledging the competitiveness and challenges of the league. "From the first day, the only thing we can control is our own performances and results, and we know how long it's going to be, how tough is this league, and that's it. Enjoy every day," Arteta stated.
The Arsenal manager further added that winning was very important. "You need to enjoy the process of winning, and that is going to be a hard moment, a difficult moment, a great moment. That's all part of that intention and how close we are to winning, and that's what we have to enjoy," Arteta said.
While the three points were certainly welcome, Arteta's post-match comments suggest a desire for more clinical performances as Arsenal navigates the busy festive period and aims to maintain their position at the summit of the Premier League.
