Following the dismissal of Rúben Amorim, Manchester United is reportedly considering several candidates for the permanent head coach position, with current USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino among those on the shortlist. Amorim's departure after just 14 months followed a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leeds United and a public outburst. Michael Carrick has been appointed as interim head coach until the end of the 2025-2026 season.

Pochettino, who manages the United States men's national team, is rumored to be a potential candidate for the permanent position. Other names being considered include Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique, and potentially England boss Thomas Tuchel and Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti. Manchester United are looking for a manager with a wealth of experience who is used to dealing with the pressures of managing the Red Devils. Enrique is considered a good choice, especially since he will be entering the final 12 months of his contract in the summer and has not yet extended his deal.

Carrick's appointment marks his second stint as interim manager, having previously held the role in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjær's departure. Jonathan Woodgate and Steve Holland are expected to join Carrick's coaching staff. Carrick, a former Manchester United player, has expressed his honor in leading the team and is focused on helping the players reach the club's expected standards.

Pochettino has been linked with Manchester United several times. He has a track record of developing young players and implementing a clear playing style, which could suit the current United squad. Former United captain Gary Neville said United are looking for a manager with experience in the English top flight, something Pochettino has. Sir Alex Ferguson has also praised Pochettino, even calling him the "best manager in the Premier League" during his time with Tottenham.

Manchester United currently sits seventh in the Premier League. The club is not competing in European competitions this season after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign. Carrick's first match as head coach will be against Manchester City.
