Tottenham Hotspur's return to Champions League action after a two-year absence was marked by a narrow 1-0 victory over Villarreal, secured in bizarre fashion. A calamitous own goal by Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior just four minutes into the match proved to be the decisive moment in a game where clear-cut chances were few and far between.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium witnessed a moment of pure misfortune for the Spanish side, as Lucas Bergvall's low cross towards Richarlison appeared to be a routine catch for Junior. However, the Brazilian goalkeeper fumbled the ball, allowing it to squirm off his body and trickle over the line. The early goal, gifted in such an unexpected manner, set the tone for a nervy and at times chaotic encounter.

Despite the early advantage, Tottenham struggled to capitalize and assert their dominance. Villarreal, shaken by the early blunder, gradually grew into the game, with former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe posing a significant threat. Pepe had several opportunities to equalize, including a late free-kick that flashed narrowly wide of the post, but Tottenham's defense, which has been impressive in the Premier League this season, held firm.

The second half was a largely uneventful affair, with neither side able to create many clear-cut chances. Tottenham appeared content to protect their slender lead, while Villarreal struggled to break down a resolute Spurs defense. A late challenge by Micky van de Ven on Georges Mikautadze, right on the edge of the penalty area, caused some concern, but VAR confirmed that the foul occurred just outside the box.

New Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, who took over from Ange Postecoglou in June, admitted that his team had to grind out the victory against a very good Villarreal side. Frank, who was managing in the Champions League for the first time, acknowledged the importance of starting the group stage with a win, even if it came in unconventional circumstances.

The match also saw the return of former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey to North London, this time in Villarreal colors. Partey, who faces serious charges, was introduced as a substitute to a chorus of boos from the home crowd.

Ultimately, Tottenham's victory was a result of capitalizing on a moment of sheer luck and displaying defensive resilience. While the performance may not have been the most convincing, securing three points in their opening Champions League fixture was a welcome boost for Frank and his team.
