The University of Michigan is reeling after the abrupt dismissal of its head football coach, Sherrone Moore, on December 10, 2025. The university cited "credible evidence" of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member as the reason for the firing. Adding to the turmoil, Moore was arrested and faced charges including home invasion and stalking. He was released on a $25,000 bond.

Jim Harbaugh, who coached Moore at Michigan and hand-picked him as his successor, expressed his shock at the news. Harbaugh, now the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, stated that he is "still processing that like a lot of people, I'm sure". He learned of Moore's firing from an equipment staffer.

Harbaugh initially hired Moore in 2018 as the Wolverines’ tight ends coach. Moore later transitioned to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator. He even stepped in as acting head coach for several games during the 2023 season when Harbaugh faced suspension. When Harbaugh departed to coach the Chargers in January 2024, Moore was appointed head coach. Moore led the Wolverines through the 2024 and 2025 seasons, achieving an 18-8 record. His tenure included a notable victory against No. 2 Ohio State in 2024 and securing top quarterback prospect Bryce Underwood.

The sudden turn of events has left the Michigan program in disarray. The university has appointed associate head coach Biff Poggi as interim head coach to guide the team through its upcoming Cheez-It Citrus Bowl matchup against Texas on December 31. Simultaneously, the athletic department has initiated a national search for a permanent replacement.

Moore's legal troubles further complicate the situation. Following his firing, he was detained by police, and prosecutors formally charged him with third-degree home invasion, a felony, along with misdemeanor counts of stalking and breaking and entering. Prosecutors allege that Moore forced entry into the staff member's apartment and made threats of self-harm.

The situation has prompted an expanded inquiry into the program's conduct by Michigan officials. The university president called Moore's alleged relationship a "painful" breach of trust. As the investigation unfolds and the legal proceedings continue, the future of Michigan football remains uncertain.
