Chelsea secured their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Cardiff City at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday. Despite Cardiff being the only non-Premier League team remaining in the competition, the Blues were made to work for their win, with two second-half goals from substitutes turning the tide in their favor.
The first half saw a resolute Cardiff side, the leaders of League One, matching Chelsea's intensity and creating several opportunities. Isaak Davies missed an early chance for the hosts, and Filip Jorgensen, Chelsea's goalkeeper, had to be alert to deny Calum Chambers. Chelsea, fielding a youthful team, struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Tyrique George posing the biggest threat. The first half concluded goalless, leaving Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca with much to ponder.
Maresca responded by bringing on Alejandro Garnacho and Joao Pedro at halftime, injecting much-needed impetus into Chelsea's attack. The change paid dividends in the 57th minute when Garnacho capitalized on a Cardiff error to slot home the opener, assisted by Facundo Buonanotte. However, Cardiff responded strongly, with David Turnbull scoring a diving header in the 75th minute to level the score.
The match remained finely balanced until the 82nd minute when another Chelsea substitute, Pedro Neto, fired a low shot that deflected off Bagan and past Cardiff goalkeeper Trott. The goal, somewhat fortunate, restored Chelsea's lead and made Neto Chelsea's outright top goalscorer this season. Garnacho then sealed the victory in stoppage time, scoring his second goal of the night, assisted by Joao Pedro.
Chelsea's victory means they progress to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup for the third time in five seasons. While the Premier League club ultimately proved too strong, Cardiff can be proud of their performance, having given Chelsea a stern test and showcasing their quality. The draw for the semi-finals will take place soon, with Chelsea looking to continue their quest for silverware.
The match was broadcasted on Sky Sports in the UK and Paramount+ in the US.
