Beyond the Headlines: Evaluating William Nylander's True Value to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

William Nylander: More Than Just Noise

William Nylander, the Toronto Maple Leafs forward, continues to be a topic of much discussion and analysis among fans and analysts alike. Drafted eighth overall in 2014, Nylander, born on May 1, 1996, in Calgary, Alberta, has carved out a significant role for himself in Toronto. Known for his offensive flair and speed, he's often called "Willy Styles". But beyond the highlight-reel plays and occasional trade rumors, what is Nylander's true value to the team?

Nylander's journey with the Maple Leafs began with high expectations. After being drafted, he signed a three-year entry-level contract in August 2014. He then played for MoDo Hockey in the SHL before joining the Toronto Marlies of the AHL in January 2015 to further his development. Nylander quickly adapted to the AHL, showcasing his offensive abilities with 32 points in 37 games.

Over the years, Nylander has proven to be a consistent offensive contributor for the Maple Leafs. In the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season, he recorded 42 points in 51 games and led the team in goals and points during the playoffs. Nylander's regular presence in the lineup has solidified his role as a key player in the team's offensive schemes. As of late November 2025, Nylander also became the Maple Leafs' all-time leader in overtime goals, surpassing Mats Sundin and Auston Matthews with his 15th.

However, Nylander's tenure hasn't been without its challenges. Like many skilled offensive players, he faces scrutiny regarding his consistency and defensive contributions. Recently, on December 13, 2025, Nylander, who had 11 goals and 23 assists in 26 games this season, missed a morning skate due to illness, casting doubt on his availability for a game against the Edmonton Oilers. In the December 14 game against the Oilers, head coach Craig Berube benched Nylander, who was returning from being sick, citing his performance. Nylander played a season-low 13:46 TOI and did not register a shot.

Despite the occasional setbacks, Nylander's offensive capabilities remain undeniable. His ability to create plays, score goals, and generate scoring chances makes him a valuable asset to the Maple Leafs. The key for Nylander, and the Maple Leafs, lies in finding a balance between his offensive talents and the need for consistent, all-around performance.
